Cast & Blast is a mostly FREE event geared towards bringing unity, education, fellowship and fun into our community of Steelheaders. It is the perfect event to introduce new anglers to the pastime that we love so much. All of the educational events are completely free and truly are open to anyone. We have tried to cram a lot into this weekend so please do your best to take in as much as possible while still finding some time to fish. The venues for the Cast & Blast are the Mamquam Bar and the Sunwolf Conference Centre. Be sure to get your tickets for the Steelheaders’ Dinner and slide show on Saturday night. Get involved, sign up for the Ironfly tying contest and take part in our Fly Cast Mini Golf casting tournament. We encourage you to stay overnight to get the full benefit of the Cast & Blast. We have a few hotel rooms set aside at the Howe Sound Inn and Brew Pub at a special rate of $79 per night. The Howe Sound is also our beer sponsor for the event and happens to be right next door to the Squamish Fly Shop. Pieroway Metal Detector Cast & Blast 2012 Welcome Party
@SUNWOLF (Friday April 6th 3pm-9pm ) This apres fishing event takes place at Sunwolf and everyone is welcome. Stop by after your day on the water and catch up with old fishing friends and make some new ones. We have a casting area set up so you can test cast all the latest rods from Pieroway, including the revolutionary Metal Detector speys. Get here early and enjoy some fireside BBQ and a round of Fly Cast Mini Golf on our 18 hole casting course.Check out the items in the SSBC auction and help start the bidding. Steelhead Society of British Columbia Silent Auction
@SUNWOLF (Friday April 6th, 3pm – Saturday April 7th, 10pm) The Steelhead Society of British Columbia is a fantastic organization that works hard to protect wild Steelhead and the habitat that they depend on. We have been busy collecting lots of great donations that will be put forth for silent auction. These items are displayed in the Conference Centre at Sunwolf and will remain open for bidding from 3pm on Friday April 6th until 10pm on April 7th. All proceeds from the silent auction go to the SSBC and will enable them to keep working on great projects in the interest of our fish. $$$$$
Fly Rod Building Workshop with Geoff Pieroway
@SUNWOLF (Saturday April 7th, 10am-1pm) Learn how builders are using lathes to make truly customized reel seats and cork handles from exotic turning blocks and individual cork rings. During this three-hour session you will hone in on the artistry of constructing your own components to produce a completed personalized fly rod. Geoff will show you how to turn reel seat inserts, assemble unique checkerboard handles, wrap guides, inlay feathers & weaves and demonstrate how to produce that ‘factory epoxy finish’. Geoff will also discuss the repair and refurbishment of fly rods so that you can get your favorite stick back in action. FREE
Steelhead Fly Tying Presentation with Michael Orlowski
@SUNWOLF (Saturday april 7th, 1pm-3 pm) Learn the tricks and techniques that Whistler Flyfishing tying instructor Mike Orlowski uses to craft some pretty buggy Steelhead flies. You will find Mike’s presentation to be both informative and entertaining. Have some laughs as you learn how to minimize thread wraps, wrestle unruly hackle material and expand creativity within the dubbing brush.Mike will share his insights into fly profile, colour contrast, fly sizing and sexy proportion. Squamish Steelhead Stewardship Discussion with Scott Baker-McGarva
@SUNWOLF(Saturday April 7th, 3pm – 5pm) Whistler Flyfishing guide Scott Baker-McGarva is a past president of the S.S.B.C. and has over 20 years experience fishing the Squamish system. A guide on the Dean and Bulkley as well as the Squamish, Scott is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to Steelhead history, biology, politics and issues. In his presentation Scott will explain the life cycle of our Steelhead, their habitat demands, physical characteristics and potential threats. Scott will be hosting a discussion about Steelhead stewardship. Learn more about the issues that affect these fish and how you can have a positive influence as an angler. FREE
Steelheaders’ Dinner and Slide Show at Fergie’s
@SUNWOLF(Saturday April 7th 7pm-10pm) Join us for a delicious BBQ dinner catered by the legendary Fergie’s Restaurant. Not only will we be treated to Fergie’s house specialities we will enjoy slide show entertainment and numerous prize give aways including a custom built Pieroway rod. After dinner entertainment will be the IronFly finals and the closing of the S.S.B.C. silent auction. Cast & Blast Spey Demo with Brian Niska
@MAMQUAM BAR(Saturday April 7th & Sunday April 8th, 10am – 3pm) Join us on the lower Squamish river for two days of speycasting fun. Try out some new rods and get instruction from FFF Master certified spey instructor and Metal Detector Spey designer Brian Niska. This is an informal event, please feel free to drop in and make a few casts.All abilities and experience levels are welcome. On Saturday Brian will be doing a 1 hour demo entitled ‘Modern Northwest Speycasting- the Evolution of Efficiency’ starting at noon. We will be filming casting on Saturday from 1pm till 2pm. If you are interested in video analysis get your cast filmed in the afternoon and then view it at 5pm back at the Sunwolf Conference Centre. Sunday is more of the same but with the emphasis on getting new casters started. FREE

A-No registration is necessary, just show up.

A-The idea of Cast & Blast is to fish a bit and drop into the events that interest you the most, please come and go as you wish.

A-About 10 minutes.

Getting to the Cast and Blast is easy…….
If you are driving from Vancouver take Highway 99 north towards Squamish and continue through town until you start to climb the hill north of town. Take a left at Squamish Valley Road(across from the Alice Lake turnoff) and continue for 4km until you see the Sunwolf sign just before the bridge over the Cheakamus river.If you are travelling south from Whistler you will be looking to turn right at the Squamish Valley road turnoff just as you come down the hill into Squamish.
If you are driving from Vancouver take Highway 99 north into Squamish and continue through town until you come to Industrial Way(Home Depot/Walmart) where you will turn left. If travelling from Whistler Industrial will be a right hand turn shortly after crossing the Mamquam River.Continue on Industrial Way until it meets up with Queens Way. Take a right on Queens way and continue until you cross the railway tracks and pass the railway museum. Turn right on the first dirt road after the museum and continue up to the dyke. Turn right on the dyke and drive approximately 700m until you see vehicles parked on the dyke. Please be courteous and keep your speed down on the dyke as this is a popular place for hikers and dog walkers.
Moving between events
Government Road is the most direct route between Mamquam Bar and Sunwolf and offers good access to productive fishing water between the two event locations.
